Pondering About Linux

So I gather there are two ways to go about booting Linux on your PS3 and the first and easiest is running this LVL2DIAG app to select "Linux" which boots a petitboot that you install beforehand. This allows you to boot a Linux from a LiveCD then Install it. I have read this doesn't work for most PS3 friendly distros and even with one named Red Ribbon that due to it installs on USB it's slowwww.... actually, everyone that runs via USB is probably slow.

Then there is OtherOS++ which I read a couple of FAQ one of which was on their site and it seems that getting the OtherOS++ option installed is the easy part, but then it goes into all these commands and processes and things you gotta do to get Linux working. Plus factor is it's fast if you can navigate your way through those maze of instructions.

So I ask for help. I would really like it if someone that knows Linux well and can translate procedures into English and walk me through it over some sort of chat app (not IRC) then that would be great. BUT, what "we" mess up. Can I recover from a bad OtherOS++ install using that System Recovery thing that the PS3 does? Like, can I restore the hard drive without one of those E3 toys?
